As much of the template as possible is rooted in the same two databases so any changes made will carry over to other pages, for example if you add an assignment in the large view of all assignments at the bottom of the main page it will automatically show up in the table of assignments for the class associated with it and vise versa.

The assignments at the bottom of the home page can be viewed three different ways, as a calendar showing assignments at their due dates, as a table showing them by due date (or whatever method you choose to sort by), or by status. In all of these cases you can choose to hide assignments once they are completed or if you are choosing not to do them depending on your needs.
